Yahoo directs half of Web's
portal-generated traffic
(Article by Frank Barnako CBS MarketWatch)

Nearly half of all traffic driven from search engines to Web
sites originates with Yahoo (YHOO), according to Internet
traffic analysis company WebSideStory. Yahoo generates
more than twice as much traffic to Web sites as the
nearest competitor, Excite (XCIT), the firm reported.
Working with data supplied by Web sites using the firm's
Web traffic analysis tools, WebSideStory estimated that,
of the traffic directed by search engines, Yahoo accounted
for 46 percent, Excite 22 percent, AltaVista 10 percent and
HotBot 3 percent.
Net banner ads failing.
Online banner ad click-throughs are tanking, according to
a new study, but the online advertising industry is still
seen as alive and well, reports CBS.MarketWatch.com's
Steve Gelsi. An average of 0.15 percent of Web surfers
click onto a typical banner ad, down from a one-time high
of 1 to 2 percent. The dwindling number shows fewer folks
taking the commercial bait as the ad medium's novelty
wears off. Tim Meadows, a Nielsen marketing exec,
however, said the relatively meager click-through rates
don't mean that advertising is doomed on the Web.
